At some point very soon we are going to run out of superlatives to describe Demetrious Johnson. The best flyweight mixed martial artist to ever compete earned his tenth successive title defense on Saturday night in Kansas City, turning in another superb performance in submitting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Wilson Reis via third round armbar. Reis, for what it’s worth, had never been submitted before in his almost 30 fights as a professional. 

Just another day at the office for ‘Mighty Mouse’. With one more title win, Johnson will set a new record for successive title defenses in the UFC (11) — something which would mark his name indelibly among the sport’s all-time greats but, after the savvy destruction of Reis on Saturday,  it is difficult to deny that he already occupies a place on that list.

Speaking to Megan Olivi after the conclusion of the event, Dana White waxed lyrical on exactly how good Demetrious Johnson is.

“Listen, when you’re the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world and you keep getting better? It’s ridiculous, it’s scary, it’s amazing. He’s a freak of nature and I’m really happy for him”, White said.

As with any champion as dominant as DJ, there are calls for him to jump up in weight to the 135-pound fold to test himself against that particular murderer’s row of competitors but White says Johnson should stay exactly where he is and set a new high water mark for what is possible in mixed martial arts competition.

“If I’m Mighty Mouse, what I do is I stay here and I just… beat the record in his next fight and I would just continue to smash it. Let (135-pound champion) Cody Garbrandt, or whoever it might be, get some wins under his belt, take out some of the top guys in the division and maybe there’s a chance for a superfight down the road.”
