Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson, the UFC’s record-breaking flyweight champion, has undergone surgery to “clean up” some issues with his left shoulder.
Johnson announced the news via his Instagram, noting that the “surgery was a success” and thanked fans for their well-wishes.
It is not yet known how long the rehabilitation will keep Johnson from the training, but ‘Mighty Mouse’ said that he had been experiencing pain in the joint since December after tweaking it during a grappling session.
The 31-year-old Johnson, considered by many to be the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter, broke the UFC record for consecutive title defenses with his victory against Ray Borg last year. The armbar submission he applied in the bout was widely considered to be the most spectacular submission of the year.
With Johnson now temporarily on the shelf, speculation will rise as to who his next title defense will be. TJ Dillashaw, the newly crowned bantamweight champion, has long been keen to drop to 125-pounds to make a ‘Champion vs. Champion’ bout but, as per Ariel Helwani, we are still many months away from any potential meeting between the two.
