Well he said he would, and he did. After a week of controversy, Jon Jones finished Alexander Gustafsson in the UFC 232 main event and reclaimed the UFC light heavyweight title he never lost inside the cage.
The two started slow and calm, with both getting familiar with the other’s range. Through the first and second, Jones landed the more frequent strikes, using kicks to keep Gustafsson at bay and negate the Swede’s boxing abilities.
In the second, it was more of the same, with Gustafsson taking more and more kicks to the legs, which appeared to start taking their toll on his movement. Then in the third, Jones’ got his first takedown, and from there it was all over. Gustafsson was unable to cope with Jones’ strength, and a few horrible elbows and punches later and it was all over.
Jones is now the 205-pound champion for the fourth time in his career. After the fight, he called out his old rival Daniel Cormier, inviting Cormier to “come get your belt back.”
