Before he retires, we’re going to get at least one Daniel Cormier trilogy fight.
But, it appears it might not be with his arch-rival Jon Jones, and instead we’ll see Cormier close out a three fight saga with heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. The news came from UFC president Dana White in an interview with Barstool Sports.
“Stipe is recovering from that fight, he’s got some bumps and bangs from that fight,” White said. “We’re waiting for him to heal, and, yeah, we’re going to do the trilogy.”
Cormier and Miocic first met in July of 2018, where Cormier knocked out Miocic in the first round to claim the heavyweight title and become a two division champion. Then, in August this year, the two met again in which Cormier took the lead only to be stopped by Miocic in the fourth round.
After the fight, Cormier was non-committal on his future in fighting, having initially pledged to retire in March. Apparently, he’s made his decision to fight on in order to right what he perceives as his own mistakes in their Anaheim clash.
The dynamic between the two will be an interesting one. Before their first contest, the pair were both cordial, even speaking to each other over the phone before they accepted the bout offer from the UFC. Ahead of their rematch, however, both began being more personal, irritated by what they perceived as their opponents shortcomings through the media.
