Tuesday’s news that the Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev UFC main event scheduled for January 20 on ‘Fight Island’ has been cancelled once again has led to a stream of welterweight fighters putting their hand up to to be drafted in.
Among those who have expressed an interest is Vicente Luque who is keen to avenge a decision loss to the English fighter from back in 2017 after putting together a run of eight wins in his last nine fights, a run which has seen him break into the top ten in the official rankings.
“I’m ready to get that rematch with [Edwards],” Luque announced online. “I know MMA fans would love to watch it.”

Somewhat unsurprisingly, and despite having fought exclusively at middleweight in the UFC, Kevin Holland has also stated his interest for what would be his sixth fight in just eight months. However, this is thought to be a long-shot given that Holland is linked to a March main event bout opposite Derek Brunson.
Another welterweight veteran, Neil Magny, also indicated that he would be willing to trade his ‘Fight Island’ bout with Michael Chiesa for a main event slot against the Edwards, winner of eight straight welterweight contests in the UFC.

Edwards, who hasn’t competed since a July 2019 win against Rafael Dos Anjos (and largely through no fault of his own) has already indicated his own preference, calling out his old backstage rival Jorge Masvidal.
“Where that bitch Jorge at?” Edwards wrote on Twitter.
