Dana White can’t deny it, Nate Diaz’ toughness continues to be one of the most unbelievable things in mixed martial arts.
At UFC 263, Diaz was beaten from pillar to post for four rounds by Leon Edwards, only to survive and land a monster shot that very nearly ended the contest with seconds left to go. For Diaz to be able to continue on competing despite the array of punishment he took, White was left something close to speechless at the post-fight press conference.
“His leg was done in the first round, he went five rounds taking leg kicks, bleeding out of both sides of his head,” White said. “One was squirting this way, one way squirting this way. He was still doing what the Diaz brothers do. He was working the whole fight to get into his head and try to make him make a mistake, and then he eventually caught him in the fifth round. He’s unbelievable. He’s gonna be asking us for a six-round fight next time.”
The bout has left Diaz in an interesting position. While most favoured Edwards heading into fight night, Diaz’ last gasp will have plenty of tongues wagging about the Stockton star. A puzzle, White says, he’ll need to figure out at the office.
“I don’t know (what’s next),” he said. “He’s a fan-favorite, people love him win, lose, or draw. I don’t know. We’ll see what’s next.”
