Jared Cannonier is one of just two men in UFC history to have scored knockout wins in three separate weight classes (we’ll let you guess as to the identity of the other) and will look to move one step closer to another shot at the middleweight title when he takes on the brash contender Sean Strickland inside the UFC Apex on Saturday night.
Cannonier has been defeated just twice in the past four plus years, with those coming against two former champions in Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker, with neither able to finish the ‘Killa Gorilla’ inside the distance. And should he get past Strickland in the small hours of Saturday night, the soon-to-be 39-year-old fighter could be primed for one last run at the gold in the 185-pound fold.
It will be no easy task against Strickland, a man who, as our own Oscar Willis pointed out this week in the pre-fight presser, a man who is more than adept at taking shots to the face — but taking a full force punch from Cannonier has left several fighters trailing in his wage.
