Dricus du Plessis stands on the verge of a title shot in the UFC’s 185-pound fold if he can score a win in his most high profile fight to date at this weekend’s UFC 290 in Las Vegas.
The South African, 5-0 in his UFC career to date (19-2 overall), takes on former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in a title eliminator bout which will identify the next challenger for Israel Adesanya’s world title. It is a fight which should, in theory at least, display where Du Plessis sits among the 185-pound contenders angling for a shot at the crown, provided that he can come through on the sport’s biggest stage of a pay-per-view main card bout inside the T-Mobile Arena.
Du Plessis, though, has happy memories of the Las Vegas venue. His last win, a submission against Derek Brunson, came in the same arena — as did his upset win against former welterweight title challenger Darren Till in what was the Englishman’s final UFC bout, for now at least.
In that fight, Till had little riposte for Du Plessis’ grappling-heavy approach before succumbing to a face-crank submission midway through the third round.
