Michael Chandler will face off with Conor McGregor in the UFC cage this summer, the American fighter has confirmed.
It was revealed this week by McGregor during his press tour to promote his feature film debut ‘Road House’ that an accord had finally been struck between he and the UFC to arrange his return to the Octagon close to three years after he sustained a serious injury to his left lower leg in July 2021.
And while the UFC have not yet officially announced details of the bout, Chandler has confirmed that the fight with McGregor is on.
“I’ve got the official announcement,” former Bellator champion Chandler told TMZ late on Thursday. “It’s happening this summer.”
He added: “I can’t tell you the actual date, but it’s happening this summer. We have an agreement. We are fighting this summer.”
Chandler has been waiting in the wings for the McGregor fight since it was announced last year that he would be McGregor’s comeback opponent once the Irishman was cleared to return to active competition following his injury. The two coached opposite once another on a season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ last year, placing the two rivals in daily contact with each other.
But now that the fight is confirmed by both Chandler and McGregor, the American — who has not competed since losing to Dustin Poirier in November 2022 — says that it was worth the wait.
“It’s been an interesting ride,” he said. “It’s been a fun ride. It’s what I signed up for. But now we’re getting darn close, man. We are getting really close. He’s starting training. I’m starting training and we’re going to collide this summer, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
