Alexander Volkanovski wants to add another belt to his collection.

The Australian now-former UFC featherweight champion, generally considered to be one of the most fearsome titleholders in the promotion’s history, finds himself in the unusual position of having been defeated in three of the past four world title fights in which he has participated (Islam Makhachev x2, Ilia Topuria) — but there’s one slice of gold that ‘The Great’ has yet to contend for: the ceremonial ‘BMF’ title that now hangs over the shoulder of Max Holloway.

And after witnessing Holloway’s sensational buzzer-beater knockout of Justin Gaethje at last month’s UFC 300, Volkanovski says that he wants a piece of the action.

“Would I fight him? I mean, now that he’s got a BMF we might have to do this, you know what I mean?” Volkanovski told Fox Sports Australia, as noted by MMA Junkie. “I was always sitting there like, ‘How could you do it [again]?’”

He added: “But maybe there is that something there. You know, there’s a BMF now. For me, it’s 3-0, how can you get yourself out of bed for that? A BMF is something I haven’t touched before, so maybe we can do that, you know? So we’ll see what happens.”

As he noted, Volkanovski has shared the Octagon with Holloway for a total of 15, 5-minute rounds across three fights: the first and third being unanimous decisions, and the second a split decision. Indeed, Holloway’s trio of defeats to Volkanovski are his only losses at 145-pounds dating back to his loss to Conor McGregor all the way back in August 2013.

Holloway, though, appears to be at the top of the line to fight champ Ilia Topuria, the man who ended Volkanovski’s own unbeaten streak at 145, so it remains to be seen in which direction UFC matchmakers will opt to go — but a fourth meeting between the pair, even with the scores heavily weighted in Volkanovski’s favour, appears more likely than ever given the current landscape of the featherweight fold.
