Canelo Alavarez is back.
The pound-for-pound great is set to meet Callum Smith on December 19 in his first fight for over a year, which comes on the heels of Alvarez splitting with previous promoter Oscar De La Hoya and Goldenboy Promotions, with Alvarez agreeing to a one-fight deal to meet Matchroom’s Callum Smith.
In a stunning turn of events, Alvarez will be returning to the streaming service DAZN, another company he just parted ways with.
Alvarez will be moving up to 168-pounds in an attempt to win a world title at a fourth weight class. For Smith, it’ll be an opportunity to avenge his brother Liam, whom Alvarez handily defeated in 2016.
“I’m very happy to return to the ring and continue to make history,” Canelo said in a press release. “I am motivated to continue to be the best, and I look forward to fighting Callum Smith, who is one of the best at 168lbs.”
“I’m delighted to be part of this huge fight to close out 2020 and deliver this opportunity for Callum Smith,” said Hearn. “Canelo is a fearless competitor who constantly challenges himself against great champions and this will be a thrilling battle for 168lb supremacy. It’s a pleasure to be working with Canelo and Eddy Reynoso and we look forward to a spectacular event on December 19.”
