A super-fight between two of the world’s best pound-for-pound boxers appears close after Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez inked a lucrative four-fight deal with Saudi Arabia’s boxing benefactors.
Mexican multiple-weight world champion Canelo, 34, will first fight in May before a possible September date with the 41-0 four-division champion Terence Crawford, as confirmed by Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s general entertainment authority.
“The deal is done,” Alalshikh confirmed on social media on Thursday. Canelo, who is 62-2-2 in his career, responded, writing: “Let’s go brother.”
Earlier on Thursday, the possible fight between Canelo and Crawford had appeared in jeopardy amid reports that talks had broken down and that Canelo’s camp had turned their focus to a bout against YouTuber Jake Paul in May. However, according to the BBC those talks came to nothing late on Thursday and attention was turned to Canelo vs. Crawford.
The bout is expected to take place on September 13 in Las Vegas.
In addition to fights in May and September under the Riyadh Season banner, Canelo will also compete in two contests in 2026.
IBF champion William Scull is reportedly in contention to box Canelo in May in a bout which could lead to the Mexican fighter once again becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion.
The unbeaten Crawford could then be presented with the opportunity to become an undisputed three-weight world champion should he defeat Canelo. However, the American will be at a significant weight disadvantage as he will move up two divisions to make the fight a reality.
