Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez won’t be chasing an immediate rematch with Dmitry Bivol after the Russian became just the second man to defeat the Mexican star in the ring earlier this month, after it was confirmed on Tuesday that he will take on fellow pound-for-pound star Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin in September.
Canelo was surprisingly beaten by the undefeated Russian champion on May 7 as he moved up in weight in a bid to claim the WBA (Super) light heavyweight title and has spoken in the aftermath that a rematch would likely be next on the agenda — but somewhere along the line, it seems there was a change of heart after Matchroom Boxing confirmed rumors on Tuesday that Canelo will fight GGG for a third time on September 17.

The two ring greats have fought twice before in extremely close contest, with one being declared a few and the other a narrow win for Canelo. The third meeting is expected to be considered the most definitive, however, even with Golovkin now aged 40 — some 9 years Canelo’s elder.
The contest is expected to take place at 168-pounds where Canelo remains an undisputed world champion.
“In the next few days we will announce the September fight,” Canelo told ESPN recently. “Surely, it will be against GGG because we already had that agreement, but I will also fight Bivol again.”
Bivol, meanwhile, had also stated his interest in a rematch with Canelo but will now presumably contemplate taking on another challenged to his WBA crown.
