Chris Eubank Jr says that he was merely making a point to Conor Benn with Tuesday’s viral egg slap ahead of their long-delayed April bout in London.
The two rivals, both the progeny of world champion rivals from a generation ago, were separated during an intense face-off which saw Eubank slap an egg across the face of Benn, setting in motion a wild brawl on stage. The delayed bout comes two years after their initially agreed fight was cancelled after Benn failed a drug test for the banned substance clomifene.
After a series of deliberations, Benn was cleared of wrongdoing and had his suspension removed ahead of their April 26 fight in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And in a post to social media, Eubank Jr said that he chose the egg as a method to highlight Benn’s failed test — after the British boxer claimed that Benn’s failed test was a result of “egg contamination.”
“Apparently egg contamination was the reason for his two failed drugs tests,” Eubank Jr wrote online. “So I contaminated him with an egg.”
It has been suggested that the winner of the April fight will be in line for a high profile, money-spinning bout with Canelo Alvarez.
