Devin Haney says that Ryan Garcia failed drug test is a mark of disrespect to boxing and the sport’s fans.

Haney was sent to the canvas on three occasions by Garcia during their clash late last month in New York’s Barclay’s Center en route to what was the first defeat of his professional career and one of the more seismic upsets the sport has seen in recent times.

However, late on Wednesday news broke that a VADA test submitted by Garcia had been flagged for abnormalities — with Garcia subsequently protesting his innocence and stating that he did not knowingly ingest any banned substances.

But in a statement released to ESPN, Haney stated his belief that Garcia sought an unfair advantage in the ring.

“We learned about this situation not too long ago and it’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans, and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty and breaking positive not once, but twice,” the previously unbeaten Haney said.

“I’ve always been an advocate for clean fighting and this is an example of such. Ryan owes the fans an apology, and by his recent tweet, he still thinks this is a joke. We put our lives on the line to entertain people for a living. We don’t play boxing.

“This puts the fight in a completely different light. Despite the disadvantage, I still fought on my shield and got back up. People die in this sport. This is not a joking matter.”

Garcia, who missed weight ahead of the bout, has 10-days from the time of being notified of the test failure to request testing of his B-Sample. It remains unclear at this time if Garcia’s victory will stand, or if the result of the contest is to be changed to a no-contest.
