Eddie Hearn says that it is all on the line for Canelo Alvarez ahead of his upcoming third fight with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin. 

The two pound-for-pound stars are set to meeting on September 17th next in a bid to settle their rivalries after two incredibly close bouts in the past, the first being declared a draw and the other a close decision win for the Mexican fighter. However, this time around Canelo will come into the fight on the back of a defeat, having been relatively conclusively bested by Dmitry Bivol in his bid for yet another world title earlier this month.

It was just the second defeat of Canelo’s illustrious career but his promoter Eddie Hearn admitted that another defeat, which would be two on the spin, would be hard to overcome for the Mexican icon.

“The mirage of Canelo being this unbeatable fighter doesn’t exist, the reality is coming off two losses almost puts your career in the balance,” Hearn said in the DAZN Boxing Show.

“We know that Canelo went up to 175, it was a big ask, but he was expected to win that fight… He has to win this fight, if he loses to GGG on September 17th, where do you go from there?

“Back-to-back defeats against two different fighters, this time with almost no excuse. The toughest thing for Canelo in this fight is to bounce back from that defeat, he was devastated to lose to Bivol.”

Age is one thing that will be on Canelo’s side. He will be 32 by the time the September fight rolls around, while Golovkin turned 40 earlier this year — but showed in his recent fight with Ryota Murata last month that he still has more than enough in his locker to trouble the best fighters in the world.
