Second chances don’t come often in life, or in boxing.

On Saturday night, perhaps Ireland’s most accomplished athlete in its sporting history will get an opportunity to gain a measure of revenge against Chantelle Cameron for what was Katie Taylor’s first-ever career defeat in her first ever professional bout on home soil. Last May, Taylor was defeated on points by the Briton, spoiling, to some extent at least, what was to be an historic homecoming.

Life, though, doesn’t always follow the script. But on Saturday night, once again in the 3Arena in the heart of Dublin’s docklands, Taylor takes on Cameron once more — and speaking exclusively to The Mac Life her promoter, Eddie Hearn, said the scale of the task at hand remains daunting but added that Taylor performs at her best when the chips are down.

“I think that definitely the team would feel that last time she did too much on fight week,” Hearn said on Wednesday. “It was her homecoming, she was doing media every day from probably the week before which is quite unusual for her. I feel that this time around the team is trying to conserve her energy, approach the fight differently. Even in the ring walk, you saw like five minutes she was on the stage just walking up and down.

“I don’t like to say she wasn’t at her best last time because I think that’s disrespectful to the performance of Chantelle Cameron — but one thing is for sure, Katie will be better this time. But I do expect Chantelle to be better as well. Her confidence seems on another level. We’ve just finished the media workout and both look razor sharp, and we’re going to get an unbelievable fight on Saturday.

“Last time, I think that most of the causal fans, if you like, were expecting a routine Katie Taylor homecoming win. We knew, everyone in boxing knew, how tough of a fight it was. A lot of people felt it was a 50/50 fight but on paper, to those people, it was an upset and Katie was beaten in her backyard. This time around, another sell-out but Katie is the underdog.

“I think she will rise to that and I think the fans will also rise to that as well knowing that she’s up against it. She’s the underdog to win this fight. She’ll thrive on that. She’s very stubborn. She’s in for a very, very tough fight but she’s bang up for it.”
