One of the greatest rivalries in women’s boxing history is getting a third chapter.
It was confirmed on Thursday that Katie Taylor will once again take on Amanda Serrano in what will be a third bout between the two all-time greats, and after Ireland’s Taylor won both of their first two meetings via judges’ decision. The fight will take place at Madison Square Garden on July 11, the scene of their first fight which is generally regarded as the ‘biggest’ women’s boxing match in history.
Taylor’s undisputed light welterweight championship will be up for grabs in the bout which will be broadcast on the streaming giant Netflix.
“I’m 2-0 against Amanda but it’s obviously a very special rivalry that delivers every time we step in the ring,” said Taylor of the third fight. “I think it’s only right that we have the trilogy.”
Serrano, meanwhile, welcomed the fight but said that she was disappointed a formal arrangement couldn’t be made for the bout to take place across 12 three-minute rounds, rather than the 10 two-minute rounds which typically take place in the women’s game.
“I’m disappointed that Katie Taylor did not keep her word and make the trilogy 12 three-minute rounds,” Serrano said.
“This is a record-setting payday for both of us, and we owed it to the fans to honour the handshake deal we made. She didn’t.
“But make no mistake, every time we share the ring, it is war, and I know Friday, July 11, will be the greatest yet because I will finally get the official ‘W’ I deserve.”
