The undercard for the upcoming Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match is to be put together exclusively by Mayweather Promotions but if there is another Irishman who says he’d like to join in on the festivities in Las Vegas on Aug. 26th.
A host of pugilists, including world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, have staked their claim to appear on the undercard of what will likely be one of the biggest sports events in recent history — and McGregor’s friend and compatriot Michael Conlan is the latest to say he wants a piece of the action.
The Belfast man is considered by many analysts to be among the best pure boxing talents that Ireland has produced in a generation. The former world amateur champion is now 2-0 in his professional career having made his maiden professional appearance in Madison Square Garden last March, where he was walked to the ring in the company of McGregor. Conlan is slated to appear on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn undercard in Australia next month but would be open to a quick turnaround to box on the McGregor vs. Mayweather event.
The Belfast Telegraph reports that Top Rank’s Carl Moretti, who represents Conlan, are in “advanced negotiations” to book Conlan to appear at the event in what would be his fourth professional contest. The undercard is being booked by Mayweather Promotions.
The addition of Conlan would add a uniquely Irish flavour to the card — and even more so if the likes of Katie Taylor and Paddy Barnes could also be included.
