It’s been a year of ups and downs for Miesha Tate. The former UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion has announced her retirement from mixed martial arts following a unanimous decision loss to Raquel Pennington at UFC 205.

Tate’s year began in scintillating fashion with an underdog victory over Holly Holm to claim the UFC title, only to drop it on her first defense at UFC 200 last July and after a second successive loss tonight at UFC 205 to Raquel Pennington, a fighter she coached on The Ultimate Fighter, the fighter nicknamed ‘Cupcake’ has stepped away from the game.

Speaking to Joe Rogan immediately after the conclusion of the fight, Tate said: “It’s taken a long time, I’ve taken a lot of punishment. It’s not my time anymore.”

Tate leaves the sport with a record of 18-7 and as one of only four fighters to have held the UFC Women’s Bantamweight title.
