Conor McGregor says that he will thrown down again under one specific condition.
The Dubliner — a future Hall of Famer who became the first fighter in history to hold two UFC belts simultaneously — has been absent from the cage for a number of years after sustaining a severe leg injury in his most recent bout for the organisation. However, he remains inarguably the biggest box office star in mixed martial arts and is unrivalled among his peers as a proven pay-per-view draw.
But with several other factors taking up his time, including his expanded business portfolio or his personal political ambitions, it remains to be seen exactly when he might set for on Octagon canvas once again.
But if he is to come back anytime soon, he says that his next fight must take place on the biggest stage possible.
According to a message posted to X, McGregor said that he will “only” come back to participate in a stadium event.
“I’ll only come back to a stadium,” McGregor wrote on the Elon Musk-owned social media network, in reference to a video of last weekend’s Wrestlemania event held by the WWE in Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Previously, McGregor has spoken of his ambitions of headlining a stadium show in his native Ireland — with the 80,000 capacity Croke Park mooted on numerous occasions.
The UFC, however, have traditionally been resistant to holding large-scale stadium events, with Dana White previously noting that weather issues could hugely complicate such events. Additionally, he has said that he tends to prefer fight cards that take place in more intimate (by comparison, at least) arenas in order to give attendees the best fan experience possible.
That said, if the UFC are to reverse this policy who else would they do it for? For now, we wait and see.
And as for who it might come against? McGregor noted that he has “unfinished business” with one particular fighter: Michael Chandler.
