Sean O’Malley will get his opportunity for revenge in a couple of months time.
It was confirmed by UFC boss Dana White on Tuesday that UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili will defend his 135-pound title against the man from whom he seized it in the UFC 316 main event from the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey on June 7.
The bout will be a rematch of their initial meeting in September of last year at UFC 305 in Las Vegas, where Georgia’s Dvalishvili won the title with a clear cut decision win over O’Malley. He has since defended his crown against the previously undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov this past January.
O’Malley, meanwhile, has been inactive since his defeat by Dvalishvili last year — though a recent meeting between the two that was shared on social media appears to suggest that any antipathy that existed between the two has developed into a cordial sense of respect.
Meanwhile, White also stated that the newly-crowned UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Pena will defend her title against the two-time Olympian Kayla Harrison as the former PFL fighter seeks to win UFC gold in what will be just her third appearance in a UFC cage following wins over Holly Holm and Ketlen Vieira in her first two outings.
