Rafael Fiziev is considering a recalibration after a second loss to Justin Gaethje at last weekend’s UFC 313.
The Azerbaijani striker made his comeback from a knee injury as a short notice replacement for Dan Hooker against the lightweight veteran at last weekend’s event inside the T-Mobile Arena in Sin City, losing via judges’ decision after appearing to wane in the latter stages of the fight in the face of Gaethje’s consistent aggression.
Now with three losses in a row (two against Gaethje, one by injury TKO to Mateusz Gamrot), he says that it might be time to test the waters down at 145-pounds.
“I’m thinking right now about changing weight divisions,” he said to Ariel Helwani following the Gaethje loss, he said as reported by MMA Junkie via Ariel Helwani.
“I’m starting to think about changing weight divisions because I really cut weight very easy this time and this was short notice. It was very easy. All this week my nutritionist Jason, he tried to gain my weight because my weight go low so fast. Right now, I have to think about it.”
At 5 ft 8 in, Fiziev would seemingly have the type of frame that would suit a cut to 145-pounds and has competed earlier in his career at around 140-pounds, including winning the World Muaythai Federation intercontinental championship much earlier in his career at that weight. Furthermore, he has never missed weight for a lightweight content in professional mixed martial arts.
And while he made clear that he has not yet committed to featherweight, Fiziev said the featherweight division would be in for a challenge if he decides to drop.
“I want to fight with top guys, some of the top guys,” Fiziev said. “All of those guys in the top ten are interesting. These guys are in trouble if I come here. They will be in trouble. Everybody.”
