Leon Edwards has proposed a welterweight title fight with Conor McGregor, provided that they both emerge from their upcoming bouts unscathed.

Edwards takes on the third defence of his 170-pound title at UFC 304 in Manchester this summer against Belal Muhammad and in a division in which contenders are jockeying for position to establish their title credentials, he says that McGregor would be difficult to ignore if he scores a victory in his comeback fight against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in Las Vegas in late June.

“Let’s give him the opportunity to become champion, give me the opportunity to take out a guy like Conor McGregor, New York, that’d be perfect. That is the fight,” Edwards told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, as noted by Bloody Elbow.

Should the fight become a reality, McGregor would be provided with a chance to become the first-ever three division champion in UFC history, having previously claimed gold in both the featherweight and lightweight divisions. The Irishman already holds the record for the first fighter to score knockout wins in the 145, 155 and 170-pound categories.

Edwards, meanwhile, stated that he believes McGregor will have too much when they fight in the UFC 303 headliner next month.

“If you watch them stylistically, Conor’s very sharp shooter, very counter shooter, and Chandler plays off his aggression, he likes entertaining the crowd and tries to have a scrap,” Edwards said.

“I feel like he’s too small as well, he’s going to walk onto the backhand. It’s going to be a good fight but I’m favoring Conor in that fight.”

And in recent comments regarding the welterweight champion, McGregor said that their common opponents show that he would be an extremely tough test for Edwards.

“Leon Edwards, Nate Diaz almost knocked him out, had him out on his feet if that fight went on Leon was unconscious. Also Cerrone went the distance with him.” McGregor said recently.
