Ian Machado Garry is not happy that he was passed over for a title shot against Belal Muhammad.
It was confirmed in recent weeks that Aussie fighter Jack Della Maddalena had been fast-tracked into a world title bout against the champion in May; a situation which came about after top contender Shavkat Rakhmonov (who defeated the Irishman in a title eliminator late last year) was ruled out due to a minor injury.
And in a message posted to social media, the 15-1 Machado Garry said that he was extremely unhappy at being overlooked for the world title fight.
“When they told me this news, I was livid. Still am to this day,” Machado Garry said on Instagram.
“I’m not fighting for a world title because I’m coming off a loss and they’re giving it to a guy who’s been injured for a year. And they think that’s more exciting, but they’re wrong.
“Now they’re pulling in a guy who hasn’t fought in a year because he’s had an operation on his forearm because he broke it in his last fight, hasn’t fought in a long time, hasn’t been active.”
Della Maddalena has won 17 straight fights at 170-pounds but has been inactive due to injury since March of last year, where he scored his most recent win over former title contender Gilbert Burns. He had been scheduled to fight Leon Edwards in this weekend’s UFC London main event before being replaced by Sean Brady.
