Well, it was fun while it lasted.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has indicated that he has given up hope of taking on fellow tech giant Elon Musk in what would have been one of the more bizarre freak-show fights every to be contested under mixed martial arts rules.

Writing on Threads, the social network recently launched by Zuckerberg to act as a competitor to X (formerly Twitter), Zuckerberg stated his belief that Musk was not serious in attempting to arrange the bout, which was billed as a vehicle to raise money for charity.

“I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious and it’s time to move on,” Zuckerberg wrote on Sunday. “I offered a real date. Dana White offered to make this a legit competition for charity. Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead.

“If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously.” He also wrote that Musk had contacted Zuckerberg with the idea of holding a one-round practice bout at his home.

Zuckerberg apparently nixing the contest comes just days after Musk had stated online that he wanted the fight to go ahead without influence from the UFC. Dana White had previously indicated his interest in promoting the fight under the UFC banner, and said in an interview last week that he had held talks with Italian officials about hosting the bout in Rome’s Colosseum.

White had also stated his belief that the Zuckerberg vs. Musk fight would be of massive public interest, and could generate as much as one billion dollars in pay-per-view revenue.
