Tom Aspinall will get his chance against Jon Jones, according to a recent statement from former UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen.
Speaking with his co-host Daniel Cormier on their Good Guy / Bad Guy podcast, Sonnen claimed that he was privy to information which suggested that not only has the fight been agreed by both parties but that a date had been selected.
“I am confident enough to tell you that fight is done,” Sonnen said, as noted by MMA Fighting.
“That fight is agreed, all the way down to the date. That I do have the confidence to tell you. International Fight Week would make perfect sense, I, personally just in my heart, I always thought they were going to go back to New York.”
A showdown between UFC heavyweight champion Jones, who has yet to taste what many might call a legitimate defeat in mixed martial arts, and interim champ Tom Aspinall has been the most anticipated fight in recent UFC history since Aspinall won the interim crown two Novembers ago.
However, the possible bout has been plagued by suggestions of Jones ‘ducking’ or avoiding a clash with the Englishman, whom many suggest would. likely be the toughest fight of Jones’ heavyweight career.
And as Sonnen notes, at least according to his sources, any suggestions that Jones isn’t open the bout are incorrect.
“Jon has come out, he’s going to troll, he’s had some fun, he’s even tried to negotiate the media,” Sonnen said. “Privately, he takes that phone call, it’s ‘Yes,’ or anything else that comes out of his mouth. Any answer that’s not yes is not yes, but that did not happen.
“That is a false report. Jon Jones has not ducked this fight. I wish he did. I’d love to bury him. He didn’t. He did not duck Tom Aspinall.”
