Alex Pereira has already won world titles in two different combat sports — and he wants to try his hand at a third.
Pereira, the former Glory two-division kickboxing world champion and two-weight UFC world champion (and reigning 205-pound champ), defends his title in the UFC 313 headliner this Saturday night against Magomed Ankalaev. But after that, ‘Poatan’ has indicated that he would be interested in a different type of challenge.
It emerged recently that Oleksandr Usyk, the two-time conqueror of both Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, would be open to what he called a “show fight” with Pereira. Following the emergence of confirmation that TKO Group, the entity that controls the UFC, is partnering with boxing’s money men in Saudi Arabia to get a new boxing league off the ground, Pereira has sensed an opportunity.
“I jumped for joy when I saw the announcement,” Pereira told The Mac Life and other reporters in Las Vegas on Wednesday, via a translator. “Maybe September. Saudi Arabia.”
“I was the first to show interest, and then Usyk showed interest. And now we have to see the interest of the organisations. I’ll be ready.”
Gauging the UFC’s interest, though, is difficult. The company has traditionally been reluctant to engage in cross-promotional fights, with the exception of Conor McGregor’s money-spinning 2017 clash with Floyd Mayweather.
But Pereira says that his primary focus is on Ankalaev this weekend. But after that?
“I want to defend my belt, that’s my focus, but we definitely have options,” he said. “A fight with Dricus or Jon Jones at heavyweight, or boxing Usyk. These are things that are in my mind, and I think these three options are possible.
“It doesn’t depend on me, I don’t have that control. Whatever the UFC says I have to do, I’ll do.”
