France’s undefeated Ciryl Gane very much enhanced his growing reputation when he eased past former world title challenger Derrick Lewis in his hometown of Houston, Texas last weekend, setting up a date with heavyweight king Francis Ngannou in the process.

Gane, who improved his record to a perfect 10-0 with the win, will take on Ngannou at a date yet to be revealed (but hopefully this year) after he scored a third round TKO win against Lewis, and showed off the type of pinpoint striking rarely seen in the heavyweight fold in the process.

Now, whether he can have the same type of success on the feet against Ngannou — a fighter who quite literally only needs one opening to win a fight — will remain to be seen, but Gane certainly showed off that the hype surrounding him is more than justified in last weekend’s performance.

The heavyweight picture is an interesting one at the moment. In addition to Gane you have former champion Stipe Miocic, who seems to have been unusually scrubbed from the title picture since the UFC’s most successful heavyweight even was dethroned by Ngannou earlier this year.

Then there is Jon Jones, the former light heavyweight king who announced a move to heavyweight only to have sat on the sidelines when a big-money fight offer wasn’t forthcoming.

But if those two are absent from the title picture for the time being, their loss is very much Gane’s gain — and you can see exactly why he is so highly thought of when you review the footage from last Saturday night in slow motion.
