Michael ‘Venom’ Page is backing his unique style of striking to overcome Shara Bullet in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia this weekend.
‘MVP’ returns to the UFC cage for the first time since his June defeat to Ian Machado Garry where he bumps up from welterweight to middleweight for the first time in over a decade to take on the 15-0 Sharabutdin Magomedov — better known to fight fans as Shara Bullet — and the Englishman is banking on his weapons being sharper than his opponent’s.
“He’s definitely a lot more flashy that your conventional [fighter] in MMA but year I do take it to the extreme,” MVP told The Mac Life and other reporters in Riyadh on Wednesday. “His style is a bit more closer to the striking you would see, which is why I said to myself that it would be a good fight. I’ve got such belief in my style and I know it frustrates a lot of people regardless of how talented they are in that area. So I definitely favour myself.”
The fight is an unusual one for MVP given that it takes place in the middleweight division. And despite enjoying the much easier weight cutting situation on fight week, Page says that his move to 185 isn’t a permanent one.
“That’s usually the big stress this week. The stressful part is that you physically feel drained [while cutting weight]. Obviously I still have to do a cut but it’s just not in the same stress levels at all.
“I could perform exceptionally but I’ve got things I want to get done at welterweight, that’s more just a personal thing. Maybe I come back or maybe there’s another exciting fight for me to have so you might see me bounce around but the goal is the welterweight strap.”
